Finally we are at the end of the play! In the last act, Jessica and Lorenzo are very lovey dovey with one another. They sit there and talk for a long time, and listen to music and Lorenzo basically talks about how much music inspires and motivates him. Later, Portia along with Graziano, Bassanio, and Antonio come into the picture and soon enough Nerissa is on Grazaino’s case about his ring he supposedly gave away. Portia then finds out Bassanio gave his ring away as well and she isn’t too happy. The ring symbolized the fact she is sharing her wealth with Bassanio and he gave it away to get Antonio out of debt, which is the same reason Grazaino gave his away. Luckily the women were actually the ones who dressed up as the lawyer and clerk during Antonio’s case and they have those rings. After that, Lorenzo ends up inheriting all of Shylock’s fortune and Antonio’s ships are okay. Ahw. What a happy ending.
Questions: Why does Shakespeare focus so much on the music; why do Jessica and Lorenzo keep talking and thinking so much about the music? Who are all these other couples they are comparing themselves with? How in the heck did everything become so perfect in the end?
